What ”Research Use Only” (RUO) Means for Exosomes

← Back to Research Library

If you have researched MSC-derived exosomes, you have seen the label “Research Use Only” (RUO). It is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — designations in this field. This article explains what RUO means and why a responsible supplier states it plainly. It is provided for educational and research purposes only.

What “Research Use Only” means

Research Use Only indicates that a material is intended for laboratory research and is not approved by the FDA as a drug or treatment for any medical condition. In the United States, MSC-derived exosomes are not an FDA-approved therapy. The RUO designation reflects that regulatory reality accurately rather than implying otherwise.

Why honest labeling matters

Marketing that blurs the line — suggesting an RUO material is an approved treatment, or attaching disease-cure claims to it — creates regulatory and ethical risk. A supplier that labels its MSC-derived exosomes clearly as RUO is signaling that it operates within the rules, which is exactly what a serious research customer should want.

RUO and quality are not opposites

An RUO designation says nothing negative about a material’s quality. A research-grade exosome preparation can still be produced under a cGMP-aligned process with a third-party Certificate of Analysis. RUO describes the regulatory status; the COA describes the measured quality. Both should be transparent.

The bottom line

“Research Use Only” is a statement of regulatory honesty. Decisions about how any such material is used rest entirely with appropriately licensed and qualified professionals operating within applicable laws and regulations.
