How MSC Exosomes Are Characterized: Size, Markers, and Sterility
“Characterization” is the laboratory process of measuring what an exosome preparation actually contains. Particle size and concentration
A defining feature of exosomes is their size — generally 30–150 nanometers. Methods such as nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) measure both the size distribution and the particle concentration of a sample, confirming the population falls in the expected range and quantifying how many particles are present per dose or per milliliter.
Identity and surface markers
Exosomes carry characteristic surface proteins. Marker analysis is used in the literature to help confirm that a preparation is consistent with exosomes rather than other particles or debris. Identity testing is part of distinguishing a characterized material from an unverified one.
Purity and sterility
Beyond identity, a research-grade preparation should be tested for purity and sterility. These results, documented per lot, are part of what a credible supplier reports.
Putting it together: the Certificate of Analysis
Each of these measurements should appear on a per-lot Certificate of Analysis (COA), ideally produced by an independent third-party laboratory. A COA turns characterization from a marketing claim into a verifiable record — which is the entire point of characterization in the first place.
